International Workshop ''From Cold War Liberalism to Postliberalism''
Geisa, Deutschland
September 13-14, 2024
Veith Selk and Julian Nicolai Hofmann, together with the Point Alpha Research Institute (PARI), are organizing an international workshop on the topics of Cold War Liberalism and Postliberalism.
From Cold War Liberalism to Postliberalism
Liberalism has become the subject of a debate shaped by the erosion of the “liberal world order” and the declining appeal of liberal political ideas. As a result, the hegemonic position of liberalism as the dominant ideological framework of the West appears questionable, and distinctly post-liberal alternatives are being discussed. The event builds on this debate, which has so far primarily taken place in the USA and the UK, and asks about its significance for the German and European context.
The interdisciplinary workshop addresses, on the one hand, the history of liberal thought and its relevance for the present. What lessons can be drawn from the past of liberalism, especially during and after the Cold War? On the other hand, the political sustainability of (neo-)liberal as well as post-liberal ideas will be discussed in light of changing political and social conditions and looming military and ideological conflicts. Does liberalism have a future?
Registration:
The panels on Friday afternoon, starting at 4:15 PM (“Failures of Liberalism” and “Liberalism against Itself”), are open to the public and will take place at the Haus auf der Grenze (Geisa). Prior registration is required at info@pari-geisa.org
