"The German-German Basic Treaty 1972/73: International Context, Consequences, Remembrance"

Scientific conference of the Point Alpha Foundation, Point Alpha Research Institute (PARI) and Berlin Center for Cold War Studies (BKKK)

We approach the history of the relationship between the two German states on different levels. To kick off, Phillip Gassert (University of Mannheim) will pose the “German Questions” and shed light on the provisions of the Basic Treaty and the debates on unity in the Federal Republic. In turn, Hope Harrison (GWU, Washington, D.C.) will give a keynote on “The United States, Detente, and Ostpolitik”.

This will be followed by various panels on the topics of “The Basic Treaty and World Politics”, “The GDR Perspective”, “German-German Interaction” and “The Border and the Culture of Remembrance”.

On the evening of June 1, 2023, from 7 pm to 8:30 pm, a public panel discussion on the topic “From Ostpolitik to the Russian invasion of Ukraine” will take place in the Gangolfi Saal in Geisa. The guests on the panel will be: Michael Brand, Member of the Bundestag (Fulda), Prof. Dr. Hope Harrison (George Washington University), Dr. Matthias Uhl (DHI Moscow), Prof. Dr. Claudia Wiesner (Fulda University of Applied Sciences).
